May 15, 2012 (newstodate): Lithuania's Siauliai International Airport is working hard to develop its airfreight operations.
With a 3,500m CAT 1 runway, Siauliai Airport in northern Lithuania is a former Soviet military airport equipped with a new apron tower, ATC and other facilities under a EU project.
-A master plan for the airport is currently being worked out, and we are currently seeking transfer of land from military to civilian airport use allowing us to construct a new air cargo terminal, says Solveiga Vainauskaite, Siauliai Airport Marketing and Public Procurement Assistant.
-We are currently seeing three to four operations per month by El Al, carrying cattle exports to Israel, and only two weeks ago Turkish Airlines started Airbus A300 freighter flights between Istanbul and Siauliai, aiming at four to five monthly rotations primarily carrying Lithuanian exports of cattle.
-Right now we only have a former hangar at our disposal for cargo handling. With a new cargo terminal we would be in a position to offer a broader range of cargo terminal services including cooling and freezer further enhancing our potentials of attracting more cargo operations, says Ms Vainauskaite.
