May 31, 2012 (newstodate): Latvia is seeing prospects for becoming a major transit point for ISAF and US cargo both to and from Afghanistan.
Starting from April 2012, Riga Airport has served as a transfer point for ISAF supplies to Afghanistan, and hopes are now rising for a future role as a logistics hub for shipments from Afghanistan as US and other ISAF forces wind down their combat involvement in Afghanistan in 2014.
As a first test-run, the first ex-Afghanistan Boeing 747-400 freighter landed at Riga Airport this week, with shipments transferred into Riga Port for onward sea transportation to the USA.
The ISAF air transport services to and from Afghanistan via Riga Airport are provided by the US carriers National Air Cargo and Kallitta Air with three daily rotations.
The new ISAF traffic has lifted monthly cargo volumes at Riga Airport by 600-700 percent from April 2012.
