May 2, 2012 (newstodate): Finland's airfreight market is strongly dominated by the national carrier, Finnair with a market share around 50 percent. But there is room for competitors.
No 2 in Finland's IATA export cargo statistics is Lufthansa Cargo that attaches great importance to this market.
-Our market share falls within the range of 10 to 12 percent, and we certainly see potentials to grow this share further, says Alexander Kohnen, Lufthansa Cargo Director for the Nordic and Baltic countries.
-We are indeed considering ways to increase our market share, but one thing is for sure: for Lufthansa Cargo, cutting rates is not an option. Cargo rates in the Finnish market are already below reasonable levels which also shows in the balance sheet of the national carrier.
-It remains a fact, too, that the Finnish exporting industries are not exactly growing these years, as can be seen also from CASS statistics noting a decline by 6.9 percent, y-o-y, in March 2012 as an example.
-So after all, the challenge is to seek growth in a declining market where rate levels are already much too low. The answer lies first of all in providing quality in service, and products meeting the requirements in the market, says Mr Kohnen.
After Finnair, Lufthansa Cargo is the only provider in the market with two-digit market share percentages, leaving other competitors with shares below six percent and, in most cases, below four percent.
