May 8, 2012 (newstodate): Estonian Air is seeing results from its new strategy to seek a role as a regional hub carrier.
In the first four months of 2012, the volume of transit passengers grew by 75 percent, totaling 99,027 out of a total of 224,747 passengers carrier on the entire route network.
In April 2012, after introducing the new hub and spoke strategy, the growth of transit passenger number was 164 percent.
In April the highest proportion of the carrier's transit passengers at Tallinn Airport were on routes to and from Helsinki, Tartu, Riga, St. Petersburg and Vilnius.
The most popular routes for transit passengers from Scandinavia were Kiev, Vilnius, Riga, St. Petersburg, Moscow, Tbilisi and Hanover.
As a strategy to compensate for the small home market, the increasing volumes of transit passengers allow Estonian Air to open new destinations and offer more frequent flights between Tallinn and important European destinations.
