May 21, 2012 (newstodate): The Balkan airlines are all faced with debts piles, lack of profitability and declining market shares. One way out might be the formation of a joint airline holding company.
This weekend, the CEOs of Montenegro Airlines, Adria Airways, Jat Airways and Croatia Airlines met to discuss ways of future cooperation eventually pointing towards the establishing of a joint airline holding company to gain fresh strength in the marketplace.
-Before the breakup of Yugoslavia, the market counted some ten million travellers, of which seven million were carried by JAT and Adria while the remainder were carried by foreign airlines. Today we have a market of eleven million, but only four million use the four national airlines, Montenegro Airlines' CEO reportedly said at the meeting.
Void of a decision to actually move directly towards setting up a joint holding company, the airlines decided to work closer on an aircraft fleet exchange pool, joint international sales representations as well as proposing politicians to work towards a free skies agreement between the four nations.
