Apr 18, 2012 (newstodate): Sweden's Jonkoping Airport is now to canvass the regional airfreight market to identify opportunities for attracting new air cargo business to the airport.
This follows on the decision by Post Sweden to direct more mail from air to rail transportation, ending the role played by Jonkoping Airport as a "mini-hub" since 2007 with postal flights each night between Jonkoping Airport and Gothenburg, Malmo, Sundsvall, Umeaa and Arlanda by Amapola and West Atlantic.
After July 1, 2012, he only postal flight to continue will be the flight by West Atlantic for Post Sweden between Jonkoping Airport and Stockholm Arlanda Airport.
-As Post Sweden's "mini-hub", Jonkoping Airport has been Sweden's busiest airport during some hours every night with all aircraft parking stands fully occupied. This is now to change, says Sten Norinder, Jonkoping Airport Manager.
-Instead we will focus on increasing the airport's other air cargo segments that are already growing considerably.
-At this stage we cannot say exactly how big potentials are in the region, but we have actively started analyzing the situation and the needs by the many exporting industries in the region served by the airport, says Mr Norinder.
Today, about half of the cargo volumes at the airport, 1,455 tonnes and increasing by 17 percent, y-o-y, during this year's Q1, is mail that however dropped five percent during Q1, while air cargo was up by 33 percent, y-o-y.
One significant driver atJonkoping Airport is TNT's In-night product where time-sensitive shipments are flown from TNT's hub at Liege into the Scandinavian markets via Jonkoping on BAe freighters continuing to Helsinki with shipments to Finland and the Baltic markets, while shipments to Denmark and Norway are transferred by West Atlantic freighters into Oslo and Billund.
TNT established its regional hub at Jonkoping Airport in June 2008, and the In-night product traffic alone has grown by 61 percent per month during the latter half of 2011.
