Apr 16, 2012 (newstodate): Sweden's Jonkoping Airport has thrived with Swedish postal volumes - but this will change in 2012.
Post Sweden has decided to shift from air to rail in part of its postal logistics, and one consequence of this is the end of using Jonkoping Airport as a "mini-hub" since 2007 with five weekly night operations between Jonkoping Airport and Gothenburg, Malmoe, Sundsvall, Umeaa and Arlanda by Amapola and West Atlantic.
The only postal flight to continue will then be the flight between Jonkoping Airport and Stockholm Arlanda Airport that may possibly find a new operator after the imminent change in the set-up.
The new Post Sweden strategy including the closure of the postal "mini-hub" operations at Jonkoping airport will take effect from July 1, 2012.
Today, about half of the cargo volumes at the airport, 1,455 tonnes and increasing by 17 percent, y-o-y, during this year's Q1, is mail that, however dropped five percent during Q1, while air cargo was up by 33 percent, y-o-y.
