Apr 13, 2012 (newstodate): Estonia's Tallinn Airport is mulling plans for construction of a new terminal, dedicated to low-cost traffic.
Expectations are that the airport will reach a total of 2.3 mio passengers in 2012, rising steeply by some 20 percent in passenger volumes.
At the same time the existing terminal can accommodate up to 2.5 mio passengers annually, indicating that the ceiling may soon be reached.
In Q1 the airport handled a total of 423,279 passenger, up 19.3 percent, y-o-y.
The airport's single largest airline operator, Estonian Air carried 138,623 passengers in Q1 after increasing by 21.1 percent, y-o-y, and the carrier now expects to land around 800,000 passengers in 2012, about 25 percent up on 2011.
Low-cost traffic is thus estimated to account for some 2/3 of the airport's total passenger through-put, today generated by easyJet, Ryanair and Norwegian.
