Apr 20, 2012 (newstodate): Estonian Air, now owned 97.34 percent by the Estonian government and the SAS Group with 2,66 percent, may see a change in ownership structure in the future.
-The process towards a wider ownership structure has actually already started, says Tero Taskila, Estonian Air CEO.
-The first step now underway is to analyze the entire operations of the airline to get a clear overview allowing us to break down the entity into individual business units.
-The next step will then be to go over each business unit separately to ascertain its status and its relation to the core business, air transportation. A decision can then be made as to which business units should be kept within Estonian Air, and which units might be transformed into joint-ventures with other partners, or eventually divested of through sales and out-sourcing.
-In each case the crucial question is whether the operation by Estonian Air can secure economies of scale in the individual business units. This has a direct bearing on our unit costs and profitability.
-Only when these steps have been completed and the necessary actions taken will a restructured Estonian Air be in a position to open discussions on the future ownership structure, says Mr Taskila.
