Apr 16, 2012 (newstodate): The short-fall of traffic formerly delivered by now-defunct Malev has not hit cargo volumes hard at Budapest Airport.
-Actually, some 70 percent of the air cargo handled at the airport was and is generated by freighters, and this traffic has fortunately not been diminishing, says Christa Soltau, Budapest Airport Vice President of Cargo and Logistics.
-Latest news are even the upgrading of the freighter service by Turkish Airlines Cargo, offering now two weekly rotations with Airbus A310F aircraft since March 1, 2012, and with plans for an increase to three weekly rotations later in 2012 with Airbus A330-200F freighters.
-Also we are still served by scheduled carriers including KLM, British Airways and Lufthansa, offering belly-hold capacities.
-So we expect volumes in 2012 to be at the same levels as last year, even allowing for some increase.
-On the other hand, the plans for construction of a Cargo Village at Budapest Airport remain shelved till later due to the requirements on investments. We are going over the plan again, but it remains on the shelf till at later date, says Ms Soltau.
In 2011, the airport handled a total of 106,595 tonnes of cargo, an increase by 29 percent, y-o-y.
