Mar 15, 2012 (newstodate): The Faroe Islands is a significant exporter of fresh salmon to the world's marketplace.
While Norway reigns supreme in quantities, the export of salmon from the Faroe Islands is also considerable, reaching 46,292 tonnes in 2011 after an increase by 29 percent, y-o-y.
The US market is the key importer of the volumes of fresh Faroese salmon that accounts for 69 percent of all salmon production on the islands.
-The export volumes for overseas markets are primarily transported by ship to northern UK harbors and trucked from there into London's airports for uplift - an operation that enables us to reach the US markets within 72 hours from salmon harvesting at the production sites to US distributors, says Arni Olsen, Faroe Salmon project manager.
-The lead-times for destinations in China are slightly longer but still favorable to the product.
-Especially in these days, passenger volumes on intercontinental flights from London are relatively modest allowing for ample space for shipments of our seafood products at reasonable rates.
-I am not sure if a direct freighter service from the Faroe Islands could compete on rates, but maybe seasonal cargo charters might make sense also considering the upgraded airport infrastructure at Vagar, says Mr Olsen.
