Mar 13, 2012 (newstodate): Russia's airport infrastructure is in dire needs for a massive upgrading.
Russia currently has a total of 315 commercial airports, of which 63 percent have covered runways, while the remainder have grass covered runways or landing strips.
12 percent of the runways with covered surfaces, and 18 percent of those with natural surfaces are in imminent need of repair, but funds are insufficient to support necessary works.
In 2011, the federal budgets provided for 35 projects, and in 2012 federal means have been allocated to 44 projects which is still not enough to cover all the needs for development of the country's airport infrastructure.
Besides, only 70 percent of Russia's airport are equipped with adequate lighting systems.
