Mar 23, 2012 (newstodate): Many issues are at stake when Germany and Russia meet to discuss air traffic between the two markets.
For one, Lufthansa Cargo is keen to obtain right for a total 30 weekly freighter flights through Russian air space, but has so far only 19 have been granted immediately before the start of the new summer schedule.
On the Russian side, AirBridgeCargo, part of the Volga-Dnepr Group wants 5th freedom rights for its operations at Frankfurt Hahn, but Germany has so far reportedly declined to even add this point to the agenda.
Next, the enforcement of EU's Emission Trading Scheme has met with strong objections from Russia as well as from many other countries including China, USA and India, further adding to a most strained atmosphere around the negotiation table.
In the end, all issues are intertwined, rendering decision made on purely commercial grounds extremely complex.
