Mar 19, 2012 (newstodate): With the enhanced capability of the Faroe Island' airport at Vagar, new business opportunities are opening as well.
Among these are visions of introducing air cargo services with freighter aircraft that may now operate in and out of Vagar Airport without the weight penalties so far incurred due to the limited length of the runway.
The original 1,250m runway has been extended eastwards by 350m and by another 200m westwards, allowing for operations without weight penalty by larger aircraft including the Airbus Family/Boeing 737.
A group has been formed around a project to set up a freighter service primarily targeting the significant and growing export of salmon from the Faroe Islands to global markets totaling about 50,000 tonnes in 2011, with the US market as the largest importer of fresh salmon that account for almost 70 percent of the total production.
According to industry sources, the project is led by pilots from the Faroe Islands currently working abroad with other carriers.
