Mar 27, 2012 (newstodate): For the second time in 2012, Lithuania's Kaunas Airport in February saw its cargo volumes at a flat zero in its monthly statistics.
Like in January, the airport also had no airfreight at all in February 2012, while mail still generated 121 tonnes in February and 118 tonnes in January.
Behind the negative development is the sustained suspension of freighter services from China to Kaunas after Jade Air Cargo was grounded.
By the end of September 2010, Hoptrans launched its weekly IL-96-400T freighter flight operated by Polet Airlines from Shanghai to Kaunas Airport.
From April 2, 2011, Polet Airlines was replaced by Jade Cargo with a weekly Boeing 747-400F flight from Shanghai for Hoptrans and Agility in Lithuania, and from June 18, 2011, Lufthansa Cargo Lufthansa Cargo took over the flight from Kaunas Airport to Frankfurt, extending to Bombay, India.
The Jade Cargo flights were, however, suspended shortly before Christmas 2011, initially planned to restart in January 2012 but still grounded due to the unfolding problems at Jade Cargo.
