Mar 27, 2012 (newstodate): As part of its strategy aiming at becoming profitable again from 2014, the Latvian carrier is reining in on its operations in Finland.
The Latvian prime minister has, however, stressed that the route between Riga and Helsinki must be preserved.
On the other hand, airBaltic will reportedly cease servicing several Finnish destinations after having earlier provided flights connecting Riga with 10 airports in Finland, including Helsinki, Oulu, Lappeenranta, Turku, Tampere, Vaasa, Kuusamo, Kuopio, Rovaniemi and Kittila.
Only two years ago, airBaltic planned to establish its "Arctic Gateway" at Oulu, with up to 15 direct flights to other destinations in Finland as well as the Baltic region.
airBaltic earlier considered Finland and "under-served" aviation market ideally poised to enlarge the home market of the Latvian carrier.
