MAr 22, 2012 (newstodate): It remains in the air if Hoptrans, Agility and Lufthansa Cargo will bring Jade Cargo operations back at Lithuania's Kaunas Airport.
But at least a solution to Jade Air's strained financial needs has been found in the form of a restructuring of the carrier in cooperation between Lufthansa Cargo that holds 25 percent of the stake, and the Chinese logistics provider UniTop.
Speaking at yesterday's Lufthansa Cargo annual press conference in Frankfurt, the company's chairman and CEO, Karl Ulrich Garnadt said that a resumption of flight operations is in preparation, although no exact date could currently be announced.
A resurrection of the carrier's flights is, however to be expected within only "a few months", and plans are to retain the existing management team at least in an interim period.
In Lithuania, a spokesperson for Hoptrans has also recently confirmed to newstodate that negotiations are indeed taking place with hopes for re-starting the service later in 2012.
By the end of September 2010, Hoptrans launched its weekly IL-96-400T freighter flight operated by Polet Airlines from Shanghai to Kaunas Airport.
From April 2, 2011, Polet Airlines was replaced by Jade Cargo with a weekly Boeing 747-400F flight from Shanghai for Hoptrans and Agility in Lithuania, and from June 18, 2011, Lufthansa Cargo Lufthansa Cargo took over the flight from Kaunas Airport to Frankfurt, extending to Bombay, India.
The Jade Cargo flights were, however, suspended shortly before Christmas 2011, initially planned to restart in January 2012 but still grounded due to the unfolding problems at Jade Cargo.
