Mar 23, 2012 (newstodate): Israel and the European Union have finalized negotiations on a new comprehensive aviation agreement.
Following eight rounds of negotiations since December 2008, the two sides have agreed to develop a common aviation area between Israel and the EU based on common rules.
Based on the agreement, all EU airlines will be able to operate direct flights to Israel from anywhere in the EU, and Israeli carriers will be able to operate flights to airports throughout the EU.
The EUIsrael air transport market will be opened gradually so that by the start of the summer season in 2017, the market will be fully open with no restrictions on the number of weekly flights between Israel and the EU.
The agreement will replace bilateral air services agreements between EU member states and Israel and constitute a further step in creating a wider Common Aviation Area between the EU and its neighbors.
Similar aviation agreements with neighboring countries have already been negotiated with the Western Balkan countries, Morocco, Jordan, Georgia and Moldova.
Negotiations are now ongoing with Ukraine and Lebanon, and talks between EU and Azerbaijan and Tunisia are due to start soon.
