Mar 09, 2012 (newstodate): Thanks to its freighter operations, Finnair Cargo saw its total cargo volumes up by 20.2 percent, y-o-y, in February 2012.
A total of 12,558 tonnes of cargo was carried on Finnair's passenger and freighter flights, but while loads on passenger flights only grew by 3.7 percent to 8,753 tonnes on the passenger flights, freighters lifted another 3,791 tonnes, an increase by 94.4 percent, y-o-y.
Except for the New York-Helsinki freighter flights, all other cargo aircraft are operated on routes to and from Asia.
The loads on the Asian passenger flights generated 6,395 tonnes, an increase by eight percent, and this was the only segment with positive growth in volumes in February.
During January-February 2012 Finnair Cargo thus generated a total of 24,595 tonnes, an increase by 13.9 percent, y-o-y, half of which or 12, 429 tonnes, were transported on passenger flights on the Asian segment that, however, grew only 4.4 percent, y-o-y.
During the two month, volumes on cargo flights grew by 71.7 percent to 7,552 tonnes.
From March 1, 2012, Finnair Cargo has suspended its freighter operations between Helsinki and Shanghai, China, due to waning market demand and low profitability.
