Mar 23, 2012 (newstodate): Following on the recent extension of runway capacity at Vagar Airport, the Faroese carrier Atlantic Airways has now taken a further step into a new future with Airbus aircraft.
On March 22, the carrier took delivery of its first Airbus A319 aircraft that will be introduced in commercial service from March 28 on the trunk route to Copenhagen, Denmark.
The aircraft was ordered in 2008, and the carrier holds an option for a second aircraft.
Besides the route to Copenhagen, Atlantic Airways will also open up traffic on new routes with the A319 aircraft, including season flights to Barcelona as the first new destination from June to August 2012.
The airport's runway has been extended from 1,250 m to 1,799 m, allowing the aircraft to operate without weight penalties.
With these new opportunities, other carriers may also be expected to sneeze at the Faroese market, with Norwegian as one example.
