Mar 26, 2012 (newstodate): The EU Commission wants to see more competition in ground handling at larger airports in Europe.
The Commission has proposed that in future a least three, rather than as of now two ground handling service suppliers will be allowed to operate at large airports in order to boost competition, bring down prices, and improve the service quality.
Part of the proposal is also to secure better and unified working conditions for ground handling staff, which should lead to improved efficiency, safer working environment and eventually better regularity on the ground.
The EU transport ministers have now given the proposal their thumbs-up, pacing the way for continued preparations for new regulatory work on the issues.
Under the current regulations, airports with passenger volumes exceeding two mio annually must open up for a second ground handling services provider.
