Mar 21, 2012 (newstodate): Western airlines find difficulties in obtaining sufficient overflight rights from Russia.
One example is Lufthansa Cargo that would need rights to perform some 30 weekly flights through Russian air space.
The carrier has currently only landed 19 weekly Russian overflights, and negotiations are still going between the parties.
Another company is AeroLogic, where Lufthansa Cargo holds 50 percent of the shares, that has not been able to obtain any overflight rights from Russian authorities.
-This has of course absolutely no connection to the EU enforcement of the Emission Trading Scheme, but it provides yet another proof of the fact that aviation-related issues and the introduction of new requirements on the industry are best handled through the UN agency ICAO, ensuring a comprehensive evaluation and industry-wide commitment prior to enforcement of new regulations, says Karl Ulrich Garnadt, Lufthansa Cargo CEO and Chairman, speaking at today's annual press conference in Frankfurt.
