Mar 26, 2012 (newstodate): The shortfall of traffic and the ensuing decline in revenues after the bankruptcy of Malev has now forced to closure of the Terminal 1 at Budapest Airport.
Also the planned construction of the airport's Cargo City will be affected.
Terminal 1 was dedicated to serving low-cost traffic, and while this traffic is increasing significantly after Malev's demise the total volumes does not warrant the operation of both Terminal 1 and 2.
Effective from April 1, 2012, WIZZ Air's traffic will move to handling at Terminal 2, while the remaining low-cost operators will move gradually until the final closure of Terminal 1.
Terminal 1 is the original passenger terminal at the airport, stemming from the old Soviet times, but renovated and dedicated to low-cost traffic from 2005.
