Mar 15, 2012 (newstodate): Counting destinations, Latvia's Riga Airport is seemingly losing terrain to competing airports in the neighboring Baltic countries.
According to the airline summer schedules, the number of destinations to be reached with direct non-stop flights from Riga Airport will go down from 85 in summer 2011 to 71 in summer 2012.
In contrast, Tallinn Airport in Estonia will see the number of destinations reached by direct non-stop flights go up by six, and Vilnius Airport in Lithuania will add five new destinations this summer.
Riga Airport is, however, still by far the largest airport in the Baltic region, counting passengers, followed by Tallinn and Vilnius.
In 2011 Riga Airport handled a total of 5.1 mio passengers, increasing 9.5 percent y-o-y, while Tallinn Airport handled 1.9 mio passengers and Vilnius Airport 1.7 mio passengers.
Growth-wise, Estonia's Tallinn Airport topped with 38 percent, y-o-y, followed by Vilnius Airport with volumes rising 24.7 percent, y-o-y.
