Mar 20, 2012 (newstodate): Are plans for a freighter service at the Faroe Islands realistic?
-The project may well have prospects for success in the future, but in the short term it seems less plausible, says Halgir Olsen, Faroe Ship sales manager.
-Almost all fresh seafood from the Faroe islands is taken by ship to the UK and then flown out from London Heathrow that offers a broad range of frequent connections to the global market place. It may leave the islands on Friday evening and be ready for pick up at destinations in the USA on Monday evening.
-Given the rates levels out of London, it is questionable if rates on a dedicated freighter would be competitive.
-But if quality of services are higher, and if customers would be willing to pay higher rates, a freighter service might of course have a future. But after all, a freighter would take maybe some 30 tonnes per flight once weekly which would correspond to only five or ten percent of the loads out of the Faroe Islands, says Mr Olsen.
