Feb 17, 2012 (newstodate): The Latvian charter and ACMI company SmartLynx has now established itself as a purely national company.
Starting from this year, the Icelandair Group has sold its 100 percent of the stake in the carrier to the management of SmartLynx, while Icelandair and SmartLynx will maintain a mutually supportive relationship for the near future.
Based at Riga Airport, SmartLynx Airlines was acquired by the Icelandair Group in 2006, but was put up for sale in 2011 as the Icelandair Group formulated the strategy of returning to core business.
Managed by Omar Benediktsson as CEO, the carrier now operates a fleet of Airbus A320 aircraft used on charter operations and ACMI.
