Feb 10, 2012 (newstodate): Iceland Express has announced the opening of flights to three new destinations in summer 2012.
New to come are flights from Iceland to Vilnius, Prague and Edinburgh, while flights will also be offered to two airports in London.
The new summer schedule will thus comprise flights to 16 destinations, down from 24 in last year's program.
Iceland Express will also cooperate with the Czech company Holidays Czech Airlines to provide onward flight options via Prague to a range of destinations in central and southern Europe.
Iceland Express has contracted Holidays Czech Airlines to provide aircraft capacity as a temporary solution, pending the acquisition of own aircraft and the granting of an own AOC following on the demise of the earlier provider, Astreaus.
So far, no less than 16 airlines have reportedly announced, or are expected to announce, flight schedules that include Icelandic destinations on their route maps, giving the country's national carrier Icelandair a rough ride.
Besides Icelandair, Iceland Express will surely feel the pressure from the emergence of a second Icelandic low-cost carrier, WOW Air currently being set up to start operations from summer 2012.
