Feb 07, 2012 (newstodate): The new EU security regulations including demands on "known consignor" status will bring a range of unforeseen issues into focus.
One of these will be shipments of human remains - dead persons transported by air in sealed coffins.
The new regulations allow for no exceptions to the demand for status as "known consignor" to avoid the request on full screening of shipments.
In the case of human remains in coffins, the screening is impossibly due to the layers of lead and zink sealing. And very few, if any, undertakers will have volumes enough to sustain the expenses and requirements in connection with achieving the "known consignor" status.
So, human remains will have to be screened, one way or the other, after April 29, 2013.
