Feb 23, 2012 (newstodate): If the rosy optimism of the Russian aircraft manufacturer United Aircraft Corporation turns into reality, the world will see the fleet of large An-124 Ruslan freighters growing significantly towards 2020.
The company reportedly plans to build up to 60 of the aircraft till 2020, including 10 new units for Russia's Ministry of Defense in addition to upgrading of another batch of 22, 40 aircraft for the Volga-Dnepr Group and seven for Polet Airlines.
Volga-Dnepr is currently operating 10 AN-124 freighters, Polet Airlines operates eight AN-124, Antonov Airlines operates seven units, and Russia's Air Force operates a fleet of 25 aircraft.
So far, Volga-Dnepr and Polet Airlines have each placed orders for a further five AN-124, so there is indeed a long way to go..
