Feb 01, 2012 (newstodate): 2011 was not exactly a year of jubilation for SAS' cargo handling arm, Spirit Air Cargo Handling in Denmark.
-We do not yet have all figures from 2011 in our system, but we will probably see total volumes handled by Spirit down some 10 percent, compared to 2010, says Carsten Johansson, Spirit Air Cargo Handling managing director.
-The first half-year proceeded rather well, but the decline set in during the latter part of the year, notably in the Asian traffic.
-North American volumes were also turbulent, but stabilizing again over the year. On the other hand, cargo volumes to and from the Middle East and markets in Eastern Europe, Russia and CIS have developed positively and outbalancing at least some of the effects from the waning Asian markets, says Mr Johansson.
Expectations for 2012 are relatively modest, maybe slightly lower than 2011.
