Dec 19, 2012 (newstodate): With airfreight up 75.2 percent, y-o-y, in November 2012, Lithuania's Kaunas Airport will be ending the year at a more positive note than seen by mid-year while still below levels of 2011.
The airport thus handled 647 tonnes of cargo in November, 489 tonnes of which was air cargo, primarily imports from China for onward distribution by truck as managed by the logistics company Hoptrans.
January-November 2012 volumes thus landed at 2,966 tonnes, including 1,372 tonnes of air cargo.
During the same period in 2011, total were 3,850 tonnes including 2,401 tonnes of air cargo.
-2012 has indeed been a difficult year for us as well for the industry in general. Anyhow, Hoptrans has done a terrific job, which proves that they are close to their customers and holding a strong position in the market, says Jurate Baltrusaityte, Kaunas Airport chief of marketing department.
-We are seeing the positive development continuing so far into December, but of course the race will be over by Christmas and we cannot expect to see much growth before after the Chinese new year in February, meaning that March will prove if the positive trend has indeed stuck ground, says Ms Baltrusaityte.
