Dec 03, 2012 (newstodate): 2013 will reportedly see the opening of new routes by the Latvian carrier airBaltic that has kept a low profile in a year of restructuring.
The new route openings will, however, depend on the outcome of ongoing talks with a potential new partner.
The airline today has 60 destinations on its route map centering at its hub at Latvia's Riga International Airport.
On November 1, 2012, Latvia concluded a tender for attracting a new owner for 50 percent minus one share in airBaltic, currently owned 99 percent by the state.
According to unconfirmed Baltic media reports, Turkish Airlines emerged as the only European party to come forth, but airBaltic has not let out any information on the results of tender or indications of which way negotiations are turning.
The carrier needs fresh capital to secure its continued development including the acquisition of 10 Bombardier CS300 aircraft and realization of its purchase rights for a further 10 CS300 aircraft as well as more Bombardier Q400 aircraft.
While reporting losses through all first three quarters of this year, the carrier is still seeing an improvement on last year's performance and hopes to reach profitability in 2014 under its new management headed by Martin Gauss as CEO since November 1, 2011.
