Nov 06, 2012 (newstodate): While cargo volumes are not exactly running high at Budapest Airport in 2012, optimism is at least still at a peak despite the losses from the demise of Malev by the start of the year.
-On the bleak side, we are indeed missing Malev's former belly capacity on its long-haul routes that has not been compensated for by other carriers, says Christa Soltau, Budapest Airport Vice President of Cargo and Logistics.
-That means a short-fall of some 12,000 tonnes per year which clearly leaves a deficit in this year's budget. Exporters now truck their shipments into other continental airport, bypassing Budapest.
-On the other hand some 70 percent of our cargo is carried by freighters, and we are happy to see Turkish Airlines upgrading its freighter service to two weekly rotations in 2012, and the twice-weekly Qatar Airways Cargo freighter service since June 30, 2012. Another significant freighter service provider at Budapest is Cargolux that has now also introduced its Boeing 747-8F aircraft on its route.
-So freighter movements are up up some 3.2 percent in 2012, while cargo volumes on freighters are somewhat behind 2011-levels.
-Having said that, I expect this year's total tonnages to land around 92,000 tonnes which is below the 106,000 handled in 2011. All things considered this is really not bad at all, and bodes well for the sustained cargo development at Budapest Airport, says Ms Soltau.
