Nov 01, 2012 (newstodate): Ukraine is mulling plans for construction of a second runway at Kiev Zhuliany Airport.
The airport's existing runway was rebuilt in 2009, extended from 1,800 to 2,310m with three taxiways and a new platform.
Its concrete surface will, however, need maintenance by 2014-15, and this would threaten the airport's operations raising the issue of construction of a second runway.
If carried through, the project will entail an international tender process with construction to start in 2014.
With a second runway, capacity would increase to two mio passengers a year, double the existing volume.
Among the five largest airports in Ukraine, Kiev Zhuliany Airport handled 594,400 passengers during the fist nine months of 2012 and a total of 470,000 passengers in 2011.
