Nov 08, 2012 (newstodate): Lithuania's Kaunas Airport saw new prospects opening in 2005 with the launch of low-cost flights by Ryanair.
Now prospects seem less bright as Ryanair has gradually moved the most of its Lithuanian routes away from Kaunas Airport, focusing on building up its network at the capital's Vilnius Airport instead.
After November 7, 2012, Ryanair is only offering four routes from Kaunas Airport, having moved its other 18 routes to Vilnius Airport.
As late as February, 2010, Ryanair announced its decision to make Kaunas Airport its 40th base - and its first in Central Europe.
From May 2, 2010, Ryanair based two aircraft at Kaunas Airport and opened flights to a further further nine destinations in addition to the nine already operated or announced at that time.
But right from the start, Ryanair had actually confirmed that its ultimate goal would be to operate at the Lithuanian capital airport - and this is now coming close to the target.
During January-October 2012, Kaunas Airport has handled a total of 1.8 mio passengers, already exceeding the 1.7 mio passengers handled in all of 2011.
