Nov 28, 2012 (newstodate): The government of Karelia, in Russia, is keen to see the reopening of air traffic to Finland.
It has therefore been decided to set aside a slice of the budget for subsidizing a resumption of air traffic between the region's Petrozavodsk Airport and Helsinki Vantaa Airport in an effort to boost trade between the two countries.
Air traffic was earlier provided by Severstal Air Company using Yak-40 aircraft, but this service has been suspended for some years.
The joint Military-Civilian airport, located in the region bordering Finland's Karelia, has been reconstructed under a program including the re-surfacing of the 2,500 m runway, new ILS and runway lighting systems, allowing the airport to serve also as an alternate airport in case of adverse weather conditions at St Petersburg, Murmansk, Arkhangelsk and other airports in Russia's northwest regions.
