Nov 29, 2012 (newstodate): A final agreement has still not been inked, but signs are that the search & rescue services by Air Greenland has been secured after January 1, 2013.
The carrier is to retreat its last two Sikorsky S-61 helicopters from the turn of the year, with the last commercial flights between Christmas and New Year's Eve.
The last remaining S-61 will thus be phased out from December 31, 2012, the Greenland home-rule government signs a two-year contract to secure the sustained operational and not least heavy maintenance costs of the Sikorsky.
-Negotiations are now in the final stage while the final signatures have still not been attached to the contract, says Michael Binzer, Air Greenland CEO.
-We are, however, not readying the S-61 for SAR missions from January 1, 2013, with the aircraft to be based at Kangerlussuaq.
Air Greenland has placed orders for two Eurocopter EC225 Super Pumas, to be delivered in 2014 and replacing the Sikorsky S-61 helicopters.
