Nov 06, 2012 (newstodate): Encouraged by growth in the air traffic at Tbilisi Airport, Georgia is setting in eyes on a future transfer role in the Asia-Europe air traffic.
In 2011, the airport handled 1.3 mio passengers, and the number of airlines calling at the airport rose to about 30.
The country is now investing in a modernization of its airport and aviation infrastructure preparing for an increasing slice of the international air traffic.
New carriers into Tbilisi in 2010-2011 included Air Astana, China Southern Airlines, Ata Airlines, Taban Airlines, Ural Airways, Fly Dubai, Air Cairo, and Qatar Airways.
The development has continued in 2012, with Alitalia between Rome and Tbilisi from summer 2012, and the Kazakh carrier Air Astana commencing flights from September 27, 2012 between Astana and Tbilisi, offering four weekly rotations with Embraer 190 aircraft, in addition to its existing four weekly rotations on the route between Almaty, in Kazakhstan, and Tbilisi.
And from October 2012, British Airways has put Tbilisi on their route map with daily flight services.
Also a newcomer is Fly Georgia that plans to launch flights from Tbilisi to destinations including Berlin, Minsk, Dubai, London, Rome, and Vilnius, besides the domestic route between Tbilisi and Batumi.
Tbilisi International Airport is operated by the Turkish company TAV Urban Georgia that has effectively negotiated several new contracts with airlines stepping up operations at the airport.
