Nov 30, 2012 (newstodate): Kazakhstan's Air Astana is now close to the last flight with its work-horse, the Fokker 50 aircraft.
The last two remaining Fokker 50 in service will be decommissioned from December 1, 2012, ending eight years of service with the carrier.
The first five Fokker 50 aircraft entered service with Air Astana on a three-year lease contract from 2004, and a sixth Fokker 50 was added in April 2010. The Fokker fleet has now performed more than 50,000 flights with the carrier, carrying more than 1.5 mio passengers during the period.
The Fokker aircraft have been replaced by Embraer 190 aircraft, but as these aircraft are not suitable for operations at rough airfields, Air Astana is now closing down services at several small Kazakh airports.
