Nov 21, 2012 (newstodate): The down-sizing of Estonian Air will be a strong blow to Estonia's Tallinn Airport that would exceed two mio passengers in 2012.
During the first 10 months of 2012, Estonian Air carried a total of 766,722 passengers, bringing the airport's total passenger volume to 1,920,385.
In round figures, Estonian Air thus contributed 40 percent of the total passenger flow.
With the plans now revealed by Estonian Air for a drastic cut in fleet and destinations already in the process, the value for other airlines to bring in passengers to Tallinn Airport as a hub for onward transportation on Estonian Air's network is declining dramatically, and the airport now faces a down-ward spiraling effect from Estonian Air's set-back.
It remains to be seen if Turkish Airlines' plan for launch of services in 2013 to Tallinn Airport will materialize.
Also the airport's plans for construction of a new terminal to handling of low-cost traffic have been shelved.
