Nov 22, 2012 (newstodate): Cargolux may soon be facing an ownership-issue as Qatar Airways is reportedly to divest of its stake in the carrier.
Qatar Airways acquired 35 percent of the shares in Cargolux only in summer 2011, and intentions were to reap synergies from integrating the cargo hubs at Luxembourg and Doha as well as joint utilization of the combined fleet of freighter aircraft.
These ambitions were not, however, fulfilled and Qatar Airways is now to sell it stake in the market.
Among potential buyers may be Russia's leading air cargo company, Volga-Dnepr, according to industry sources - but not confirmed by either party.
If carried through, the new conglomerate would command an impressive fleet comprising Cargolux' 10 Boeing 747-400F and five Boeing 747-8F, and the Volga-Dnepr Group's AirBridgeCargo Airline's 10 Boeing 747-400F and two Boeing 747-8F aircraft.
In addition, the Volga-Dnepr Group also owns 49 percent of Air Cargo Germany that operates another four Boeing 747-400F aircraft.
On top of that, AirBridgeCargo Airlines expects deliveries of a further three Boeing 747-8F freighter while Cargolux is still to take in a total of nine freighters of the same type.
