Oct 30, 2012 (newstodate): The acquisition by Iceland's LCC WOW Air of its competitor Iceland Express will have little or no effect on the Icelandic airfreight market.
The deal was announced on October 23, 2012, and took immediate effect with the demise of the Iceland Express-brand now replaced by that of the new owner, WOW Air.
-Actually, WOW Air signed up with us for handling of all airfreight capacity already from July 2012, and we held a similar contract with Iceland Express since 2008, says Robert Tomasson, Cargo Express managing director and owner.
-With the new situation, not much is changing. Wow air is maintaining the former schedule of Iceland Express as well as their own network, all under the name of WOW air. They currently have more or less daily flights to Copenhagen and London as well as regular flights to Berlin and Alicante.
-Plans at WOW air for 2013 also look good. They plan to add for example Amsterdam, Frankfurt and Paris to their network.
-We have been moving Icelandic seafood export shipments on WOW Air's flights ever since the start of our cooperation. In some cases they were using the same cargo handling agent as Iceland Express, and in some cases not. We have addressed that and it is all working now, says Mr Tomasson.
