Oct 15, 2012 (newstodate): The recent extension of the runway at the Faroe Islands' Vagar Airport has opened new business opportunities.
Among these is an increase in transfer flights at the airport since the opening of the extended runway from December 3, 2011.
The original 1,250m runway was extended eastwards by 350m and by another 200m westwards, allowing for operations without weight penalty by larger aircraft including the Airbus Family/Boeing 737.
-We are now seeing an increasing volume of transfer and ferry flights, primarily of corporate and privately-owned aircraft that stay at Vagar Airport for anything between a few hours and two-three days on trans-Atlantic flights to and from USA, supported by hotel accomodation close to the airport, says Jakup Sverri Kass, Vagar Airport CEO.
-Atlantic Airways of course remains by far our largest carrier, but we are also seeing more traffic by other airlines with flights carrying sports or other cultural teams. All this would not be feasible if it were not for the extended runway and our new CAT 1 ILS approach system that secures punctual operations under virtually all weather conditions.
-The positive development is proved also by airport statistics that show an increase in traffic volume by eight percent during the period January 1-October 1, 2012, and an increase by 16 percent between October 1 and October 10. So we are clearly on a steady growth track, says Mr Kass.
