Oct 15, 2012 (newstodate): After a slack summer season, Estonia's Tallinn Airport is again seeing cargo volumes rising.
A total of 2,681 tonnes of cargo and mail was handled at the airport in September 2012, which was an increase by 136.4 percent, y-o-y.
This brought the totals so far in 2012 to 16,662 tonnes, up 30.7 percent, y-o-y.
Behind the growth in volumes is primarily traffic by ULS that brings in ex-China cargo destined for Russia and transferred at Tallinn Airport on trucks for onward carriage across the border to Russia.
As a new element in this service is the launch of a cargo ship service taking the trucks by sea to a port near St Petersburg, bypassing the queues at the Estonian/Russian land border posts.
