Oct 16, 2012 (newstodate): Serbia yearns for direct flights to the USA, and since JAT pulled out from the Transatlantic traffic in 1992, many attempts have been made to find a substitute to secure the significant ethnic traffic.
JAT does not itself have aircraft with intercontinental reach, so efforts have instead been focused on cooperation with other carriers.
The latest attempt is reportedly to set up a cooperation between JAT and Azal Airlines, from Azerbaijan.
Talks are now being conducted between the two airlines and the US authorities over establishing a flight between Baku and New York via Belgrade.
Azal Airlines is already planning flights between the USA and Azerbaijan from summer 2013 after the signing of a new air services agreement between the two countries.
Serbia was earlier cooperating with Uzbekistan Airways that operated flights between Tashkent and New York via Belgrade in 2004.
In 2006, another efforts was made to secure access to the USA through a short-lived cooperation with Emirates via Hamburg.
Serbia is not currently allowed to open up own flights into the USA as the country remains on FAA's Category 2 since 2005.
