Oct 01, 2012 (newstodate): As from today, Russian aircraft with a MTOW above 5.7 tonnes will not be allowed to fly without GPWS equipment.
The ban should have been enforced from July 1, 2012, already, but a further grace period was granted to allow operators especially in the Far Eastern parts of Russia more time to fulfill the requirement.
The requirement will especially hit the fleets of aging Soviet-built aircraft including Tu-134 and Tu-154 that have been involved in several accidents that might have been prevented if equipped with GPWS.
All modern Russian-built aircraft including AN-140, AN-148, Superjet 100, Tu-204, Tu-214, and Il-96 are already meeting the requirement.
