Oct 04, 2012 (newstodate): Plans for establishing a new cargo carrier to serve the Faroe Islands gain applause from a leading Faroese businessman with supermarkets, shops and service businesses on franchise contracts.
-I am definitely positive towards the project that was actually on the agenda already when Maersk Air was operating at Vagar Airport, says Niels Mortensen, sms CEO and owner.
-The precondition is, of course, that a cargo carrier offers reasonable rates and a reasonable flight schedule. On the export side, seafood shipments would be a significant contributor of cargo, and on the import side many different businesses here would benefit from short lead-times for their incoming shipments. Not least vegetables and other perishables would hit the market in higher quality and be offering longer shelf-time if brought in by air.
-Now, setting up a freighter service would of course entail a high risk, and any dreams by the project group of start-up commitments would be unrealistic. Customers could not be expected to share a risk as they also do not expect to be awarded a stake in profits generated.
-The project must prove its worth on its own, but I am convinced that volumes are there, and new offers generate new market potentials, says Mr Mortensen.
