Oct 18, 2012 (newstodate): According to Russian media reports, the country may be opening for access by Western low-cost carriers.
Behind the move is reportedly Russia's Federal Anti-Monopoly Service that sees the permission for foreign LCCs in Russia as one way of introducing or strengthening competition in Russia's aviation industry where domestic low-cost ventures including Avianova and Sky Express lived only shortly before folding wings.
One precondition for allowing Western LCCs into Russia would however be a strengthening of the airport infrastructure including provision of fueling and other services.
So far Easyjet has applied for rights to operate the 14 weekly rotations on the route between London and Moscow left vacant after the exit of BMI.
