Jan 06, 2012 (newstodate): Airfreight volumes at Lithuania's Vilnius Airport were up 9.8 percent y-o-y in December 2011, to 583 tonnes.
The growth was provided by a rise in cargo volumes by 16.4 percent to 359 tonnes, while mail volumes pulled in the opposite direction, down four percent to 172 tonnes.
While the Latvian carrier airBaltic in December 2010 carried 105 tonnes to and from Vilnius, the volume fell to 72 tonnes in December 2011, corresponding to a drop by 40.9 percent, y-o-y.
By the end of 2010, airBaltic decided to close down its direct services from Vilnius Airport to a range of European destinations, retreating to serving the Lithuanian market by a feeder line to and from its hub at Riga Airport, in Latvia.
This move was in response to the strong growth in traffic by the low-cost carrier WIZZ Air from May 2010.
On the other hand, volumes by Lufthansa Cargo were up no less than 89 percent, y-o-y, in December 2011, to 100 tonnes.
