Jan 05, 2012 (newstodate): 2011 ended on a high note at Sweden's Jonkoping Airport.
A total of 5,456 tonnes of cargo and mail was handled at the airport - an increase by 16 percent, y-o-y.
The growth was generated especially in the mail and express segments that grew volumes by nine and 34 percent, respectively.
In 2010, the airport's cargo and mail volumes also grew by 16 percent, y-o-y, to a total of 4,699 tonnes, and the growth trend started with the formation of Jonkoping Airport AB on January 1, 2010, following on the acquisition of the airport from its former state owner, LFV.
One significant driver is TNT's In-night product where time-sensitive shipments are flown from TNT's hub at Liege into the Scandinavian markets via Jonkoping on BAe freighters continuing to Helsinki with shipments to Finland and the Baltic markets, while shipments to Denmark and Norway are transferred by West Atlantic freighters into Oslo and Billund.
TNT established its regional hub at Jonkoping in June 2008, and the In-night product traffic alone has grown by 61 percent per month during the latter half of 2011.
Since 2007, Jonkoping is also Post Sweden Logistics' mini-hub, with postal flights by aircraft from Amapola and West Atlantic operating five weekly night operations between Jonkoping Airport and Gothenburg, Malmoe, Sundsvall, Umeaa and Arlanda.
With the latest full-year performance, Jonkoping Airport is now fully back after the crisis years, with volumes in 2011 up 35 percent on volumes in 2009.
